URP 499

This asynchronous online summer course, available through the Pathways Center, is for Emory undergraduates who have secured a research summer experience at Emory or an external institution or organization.

URP 499R provides supplemental support to student researchers and prepares them for future academic and professional work through reflection activities and skills development.

This S/U course aims to enrich the experience of students involved in research projects. This course also satisfies the Experience and Application (XA) General Education Requirement (GER). Projects can be in any discipline including the arts, the humanities, social sciences, or STEM.

Eligibility

Emory students in any major who will be conducting research in any discipline are eligible. Research should be conducted during the summer and must meet a minimum of 240 hours. An offer letter from a research host is required to enroll.

Benefits

Fulfills the Experience and Application (XA) General Education Requirement (GER) through a flexible research schedule (you do not have to take this course for academic credit to earn the XA GER)

Offers optional academic credit for your summer research experience (note: tuition and fees apply)

Eligible as a Curricular Practical Training (CPT) course for international students on an F-1 visa

Cost

URP 499 offers both a zero-credit option and a one-credit option.

The zero-credit course is offered at no cost
Opting for the one-credit course positions students to be subjected to the standard summer session tuition and fees, billed through their OPUS account.

Enrollment

To enroll*, students must submit the INTERN / URP 400-Level Course Enrollment Request, which includes  an offer letter from their research or applied arts host. The deadline to enroll in URP 499R is May 19, 2026.

Offer letters must include a start date, an end date, the student’s schedule, and the student’s responsibilities. Research hosts may use this example letter as a guide.

To fulfill the Experience and Application (XA) General Education Requirement (GER), students must work for 8 weeks and a total of 240 hours. Students may combine offers to reach the required hours.
