As the end of the fall semester nears, please note the undergraduate grade deadlines below and the updated process for incomplete grades. The Fox Center announces a new fellowship opportunity for tenured faculty and your generous donations for the “Trade the Malls for Walls” holiday giving are still being accepted. Tenure-Track and Teaching-Track Faculty Promotion Deadline

Department chairs and program directors should notify the Office of Faculty by Monday, January 15, about any tenure-track faculty members who plan to be reviewed for promotion to full professor and/or teaching-track faculty members who plan to be reviewed for promotion to teaching professor during 2024-25. Undergraduate Grade Deadlines

The fall 2023 grade entry deadlines are:

• Graduating seniors and Oxford students
  • Thursday, December 14, 10 a.m.
• Graduating seniors and students with exams held on Wednesday, December 13
  • Friday, December 15, 10 a.m.
• All other grades
  • Tuesday, December 19, 11:59 p.m.

New Process for Incomplete Grades

This semester faculty will no longer input I and IP grades directly in OPUS; rather, OUE will record incomplete grades on rosters once an incomplete request is fully approved. Please direct students who need incomplete grades to their OUE advisor for support.

Faculty who needs to submit an “In Progress” grade for Honors courses or research courses where the student’s project extends into the next semester should contact oue.facultysupport@emory.edu with the student’s name, ID number, and course number. For questions about a particular student, please contact oue.advising@emory.edu. For general questions about incompletes, please contact oue.facultysupport@emory.edu.

SURE Funding Available for Faculty

Undergraduate Research Programs in the Pathways Center is excited to provide faculty in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences with financial incentives to mentor students who participate in Emory’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience. URP offers summer stipends to faculty in these disciplines (and for faculty in all fields who do not receive grant funding during the summer), to lead students in facilitating research on a tiered basis:

• 1 Student: $1,500
• 2 Students: $2,000
• 3 Students: $2,500

Call for Applications: Fox Center Senior Fellows, New Sabbatical Fellowship

The Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry is pleased to announce the call for faculty fellowship applications, and the 2024-25 theme and research seminar,  "Democracy: Past, Present, Future.” The Center invites applications from tenure track faculty who are eager to be part of a community of scholars engaged in a broad range of conversations on Democracy in an interdisciplinary setting.  

Three categories of fellows will be offered for 2024-2025:  Senior Fellowships for tenured Emory College faculty who will spend a year in residence at the FCHI; Sabbatical Fellows Program for Assistant Professors wishing to spend their pre-tenure leave in residence at the FCHI; and any faculty whose research centers on democracy may apply to join the yearlong seminar regardless of sabbatical schedule.  All faculty participating fully in the year-long Democracy Seminar will receive a research stipend.  The deadline for all fellowships is Wednesday, January 31. 

Two New Funding Opportunities at the Fox Center

The Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry offers two new programs for faculty: Interdisciplinary Research Hubs and Major Works Review Grants. For more information on either opportunity, please contact Carla Freeman, Director of the Fox Center. 

Interdisciplinary Research Hubs will engage critical themes and debates within the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences. Convenors are encouraged to engage faculty across departments/programs/schools and rank, as well as participants from other Atlanta institutions.  Clusters may meet bi-weekly, or monthly and will be supported for one year, (with the possibility of renewal). Those who have not been prior recipients of FCHI support are especially encouraged to apply. 

Major Works Review Grants are available to faculty as they prepare a book manuscript for publication or a major work of art for performance, screening, or exhibition, and are open to full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences with manuscripts nearing completion throughout the academic year. 

Grants Available for Emory Projects Supporting Black Communities, Women and Girls

The Black Emory and Women of Emory Impact Circles invite Emory faculty and staff to submit funding proposals for Emory projects and programs that advance the causes of their respective communities of interest on campus, in Atlanta, and beyond. Emory students may also submit applications on behalf of registered Emory student organizations.

Learn more about grant eligibility and submit your applications for the Black Emory Impact Circle HERE and the Women of Emory Impact Circle HERE. Applications will be accepted online through Wednesday, January 24, 2024, with funds to be used during the 2024-2025 academic year. 

Trade the Malls for Walls Holiday Giving: Gifts Due December 18

Reminder – We need your holiday spirit of giving. The College has participated in the “Trade the Malls for Walls” program since it began in 2008. This program helps families using Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (wrcdv.org) services have a better holiday.

Common items families request include bedding, kitchen goods, and cleaning supplies. We are also asked to help with winter clothing as needed and gifts for each family member. The five families we are supporting are Ayyana, Takela, Jasmine, Ciara, and Stephanie, and each created Target gift registries of items they need. Inclusive Communication Initiative for Staff Coming This Spring

Emory College Human Resources and Office of the Faculty will launch a reading and workshop series this spring for all Emory College staff. The goal is to improve our ability to have engaging and effective conversations about our differences and to understand our most proximate relationship determine our sense of belonging. A repository of books and community-curated tactics will be displayed on the Emory College DEI website.

Those seriously interested will have the opportunity to:

• Read the provided books.
• Attend a lunch to discuss what they have learned.
• Identify tactics that could be shared with the broader community.

Participant suggestions are welcomed from supervisors or individual interested in this opportunity.

The first book, sponsored by the ECAS DEI area, will be Nonviolent Communication by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, with discussion scheduled for February 2024. The date and location will be determined.

Traveling Abroad? Register for International SOS

Due to recent international incidents, it remains a top priority to educate all Emory travelers on the importance and rationale for registering with International SOS.

International SOS Overview

Emory contracts with International SOS to provide security and medical evacuation services, and a variety of online health, safety, and security resources for the university community traveling abroad on university business or sponsored activities. When employees purchase plane tickets through an Emory travel agency (CTM, Maupin, Partners Travel Management/Cadence Travel), their air itinerary is automatically registered with International SOS as a benefit to Emory travelers. If a ticket is purchased through a non-Emory travel agency, employees much register via International SOS’ My Trips. Visit the Global Strategy and Initiatives website for more details.

Emergency Preparedness: Be Emory Ready

At Emory, everyone is empowered to play a role in creating a safe and prepared community. The Emory READY campaign is a collective effort to drive greater preparedness and readiness across our campus community in the event of an emergency or critical event. Launched this fall, Emory READY is designed to help strengthen each person’s ability to be aware, prepared, and ready when on campus. 

There are five simple steps to become better prepared: 

1. Enroll in Emory’s Emergency Notification Program.
2. Download and review the free Emory Safe All faculty and staff are encouraged to download the app.
3. Review the Preparedness Checklists and the Just-In-Time Guide for Campus Emergencies.
4. Identify designated severe weather refuges, fire exits and automated external defibrillator (AED) locations.
5. Take a Life Support Training on campus to learn CPR, how to use an AED, how to treat an obstructed airway and how to control bleeding.
