James Nagy

Dean James Nagy is the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Mathematics at Emory University. A member of the Emory faculty since 1999, Jim is internationally recognized for his research contributions. He is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and has served the profession in elected SIAM leadership positions. He became Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences in August 2026 for the 2026-27 academic year.

Over the course of his career, Dean Nagy’s research has been supported by nearly $4 million in external funding from the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. His work has focused on developing new mathematical and computational methods to improve the quality of medical and space-based imaging.

He has taught a broad range of courses at Emory, from first-year calculus to doctoral seminars, and has mentored five postdoctoral scholars, 16 PhD students, and 22 undergraduate honors students. His commitment to teaching and mentoring has been recognized with the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award, the Crystal Apple Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching, and an Emory College Professorship for Distinguished Teaching in the Social and Natural Sciences.

Throughout his career, Dean Nagy has been deeply engaged in university service. Committed to shared faculty governance and service, he has served as Director of Graduate Studies, a member of the Emory College Tenure and Promotion Committee, and the Curriculum, Assessment, and Educational Policy Committee. Most recently, he completed eight years as Chair of the Department of Mathematics, working closely with faculty, staff, and students across the College.
