Writing Specialist (GA) Position

The National Scholarships & Fellowships Program, in Emory's Pathways Center, seeks to employ two part-time graduate student employees as writing specialists. Responsibilities will include reviewing student application materials, meeting one-on-one with students, assisting with draft review workshops, note-taking during interviews, and providing editing support to program staff. Work with the National Scholarships & Fellowship Program will provide graduate students the opportunity to develop skills in advising and coaching high achieving students, as well as a better understanding of student- and faculty-facing work in pathways beyond the professoriate, including administration of nomination and selection panels and interviews, recommendation and endorsement letter writing, programming development, and assessment and program evaluation.

Writing Specialists will be expected to work approximately 5 hours per week. The start date is flexibile--between late June and August 26, 2024, continuing through the fall and spring semester, with an opportunity the renew for AY 2025-26. The Writing Specialists will be compensated at $20/hour.  

The ideal candidate to fill the Writing Specialist role is graduate student with prior experience in editing, peer mentoring, and/or training as a writing instructor or tutor.

Position Description: Fellowships Writing Specialist (part time: 5 hours per week) 

This position will report to the Program Director for National Scholarships & Fellowships and/or program staff and will provide writing and editing assistance to program staff and to students and alumni applying to nationally competitive, merit-based awards.  

Position essentials:

  • Excellent writing skills, as well as the ability to understand the requirements of proposal writing and personal essay writing. 
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills.   

Other helpful skills/background:

  • Prior experience with the nationally competitive awards NS&FP supports (e.g., Fulbright, NSF GRFP, Truman, Goldwater). 
  • Experience working with undergraduates in a teaching/tutoring environment.  
  • Interest in undergraduate advising and/or academic administration.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Editing and proofing internal and external documents for the National Scholarships & Fellowships Program; 
  • Providing written and verbal feedback on student and alumni application materials (e.g. personal statements, research proposals, CVs); 
  • Leading or participating in draft-review workshop sessions; 
  • Serving as a note-taker in nomination and endorsement interviews; 
  • Other duties as assigned.
