Join the 'First Fridays' Lecture and Faculty Reception this Friday, Nov. 4

Emory College’s next "First Fridays at 4 p.m."— designed to build intellectual community and highlight groundbreaking faculty scholarship in a wide variety of topics related to race, ethnicity, and social justice — takes place this Friday, Nov. 4 in the Rose Library’s Woodruff Commons. English professor Nicole Guidotti-Hernández will give a brief lecture on "Latinx Feminist Approaches to Mexican Masculinities," followed by a lively faculty reception and social hour. Her talk will draw from her 2021 book, "Archiving Mexican Masculinities in Diaspora," which details how men’s vulnerabilities have challenged the trope of machismo, or exaggerated masculine pride.

The fall semester programming concludes on Thursday, Dec. 1 with Valerie Babb, the Andrew Mellon Professor of the Humanities in the departments of African American studies and English, whose research explores African American literature and culture. The James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference and Emory College launched the First Fridays series in early 2021 as a way to build community and conversation informed by new faculty research across disciplines.

Course Evaluation Training

Emory College will administer online course evaluations as usual this term, with a goal to complete all preparation and customization of evaluations in November prior to the Thanksgiving break November 23-25. Course evaluation configuration is currently open for department administrators and will remain open until November 22 while instructors will be able to make their own individual customizations November 7-18. By default, Emory College course evaluations will open for student submission on November 28.

A trio of two-hour “configuration workshops” for department staff will be held starting next week:

• 10 a.m.-Noon, Monday, November 7;
• 2-4 p.m., Tuesday, November 15; and
• 10 a.m.-Noon, Friday, November 18.

Each session will provide a guided opportunity to collectively step through the preparatory process with close support. Staff planning to participate need to register using the form at this link. Faculty Funding Opportunities

Winship Award Applications for Teaching Faculty Now Open

Emory College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce a call for applications for the Winship Awards for Associate Teaching Professors and Teaching Professors (formerly Senior Lecturers and Professors of Pedagogy). The Winship Awards, typically one or two per academic year, will provide a one-semester leave (i.e. a release from both teaching and service) and a $1,500 budget for professional expenses during the year of the award. Winners of the Winship Awards may take their leaves during either semester of the academic year 2022-2023.

During this leave, the Winship award winners will pursue activities described in written proposals that accompany their applications. These activities should foster their professional development related to their teaching. Full details on how to apply are available on the Office of Faculty website.

Hightower Speaker Fund Requests Due November 1

Each year Emory College receives funds from the Hightower endowment, which memorializes the late Robert E. Hightower Sr. This endowment provides funds to bring outstanding visiting lecturers to Emory. The College has typically committed funds of $75,000-$100,000 annually. These include small allocations for partial funding of a single speaker to larger amounts to support conferences with several speakers.

Faculty are invited to make requests for funding for spring and summer events by Tuesday, November 15. The committee meets once a semester to review requests. Requests that are submitted after deadlines will still be evaluated on a rolling schedule by the committee. For more information and to apply, go to the Office of Faculty website.

CFDE Funds Available for Editorial Support, Public Scholarship

Scholarly Writing and Publishing Fund

The Scholarly Writing and Publishing (SWAP) fund, sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, aims to assist faculty in developing projects such as book manuscripts, article manuscripts, grant-writing, and digital scholarship. Specifically, the grant, which can equal up $3,000, is geared toward Emory faculty members who are in need of support navigating the difficulties of scholarly writing.

Public Scholarship Advancement Fund

The CFDE also offers the Public Scholarship Advancement (PSA) fund, which is intended to support faculty in their public-facing scholarship endeavors. The grant totals $2,500 for purposes included but not limited to the following examples:

• Subvention for artwork or a related digital endeavor for a book intended for broader readership
• Developing a platform or a profile for public scholarship
• Hiring a media coach

Undergraduate Education Updates

OUE Final Exam Proctoring

OUE will proctor final exams for students who 1) cannot take their exam at the scheduled time due to conflicting exams, or 2) have testing accommodations through DAS. Faculty can request that OUE proctor a final exam for students in these categories by completing the appropriate form on the Faculty Resources page on the OUE website. Please submit questions to OUE.dean@emory.edu.

Extended Withdrawal Deadline

The Extended Withdrawal Deadline is next Friday, November 11. This extended withdrawal allows students in one of their first two semesters to take a late withdrawal without penalty (first year students, transfer students and Oxford continuees are eligible). A "W" will appear on the transcript. Students who are considering withdrawing from a course are welcome to meet with an OUE Academic Advisor. CFDE Teaching Consultations

Need help developing your course this year or simply interested in improving your teaching skills? Center for Faculty Development and Excellence teaching consultations can help! They are focused, individualized sessions between a faculty member and a CFDE staff member and/or with a Teaching Mentor (another faculty member) designed to fit your teaching needs. Here just a few possibilities for what you might work on:

• grading equity over a large course
• using interactive teaching strategies

ILA Accepting Proposals for Spring 2023 Sidecar Courses

The event will include introductory remarks by Provost Ravi Bellamkonda and remarks from retired United States Army Helicopter Pilot and current CEO of Emory University Hospital, Matt Wain.

Early Voting Available on Campus through Friday

Emory's 1599 Building located at 1599 Clifton Road, is now a polling site for early voting and election day. If you are a DeKalb County resident, you can vote at this location for Early Voting through this Friday, November 4, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you vote on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8, please remember to vote in-person at your assigned precinct.
