Campus Life Offers Faculty Support for Student Events

The Academic Initiatives team within the Office of Residence Life is working to facilitate meaningful opportunities that connect faculty and students within the residential context. The team has created an interest form to support faculty members who are working to create in-person or virtual events for students. Faculty can complete this form to request support with an event or request help to publicize an event they are hosting.

These events will primarily be shared with residential students. Faculty may also select to have the event shared with non-residential first-year students. For questions, contact Cathy Marques, cathy.marques@emory.edu, 404-727-1703, in the Office of Residence Life.

Fall Teaching “Pulse Check” Survey

All faculty and instructors this semester received a short Fall Teaching Survey last Friday, September 4. Please take a few minutes to share your online or in-person teaching experience so far this semester. This information will help inform the College’s current and future planning and support of faculty.

Emory Zoom Log-In Resource for Students

Some students are still having difficulty logging into their Emory Zoom account, which causes problems when using pre-assigned Breakout Rooms. Please note the pre-assigned Breakout Rooms will only sort correctly if students are logged into their Emory Zoom account with their NetID and password. Please share this Canvas page with an instructional video about Emory Zoom log-in procedures as needed with your students.

Online Teaching Support

The Emory College Online team continues to offer online teaching support. Please visit our website to schedule a 1:1 consultation. You may also attend our Online Teaching Office Hours on Thursdays from 1-2 pm (Zoom Link) or email emorycollegeonline@emory.edu.

"How to Be an Antiracist" webcast with Ibram X. Kendi Sept. 16

The Emory University Center for Ethics presents the inaugural James W. Fowler Ethics Event, “How to Be an Anti-Racist,” a special live webcast featuring a key voice in the conversation about race in America: Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, a National Book Award winner, 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, and the founding director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research. The event takes place 4-5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16. Register here.

Carol Anderson, Emory’s Charles Howard Candler Professor of African American and author of “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide,” will moderate the conversation, which will address systemic racial inequities and injustice in America and explore what is required from all of us to lead to policy change.

Undergraduate Education: Reminders and Deadlines

Partial Withdrawal is Now Online

The Office for Undergraduate Education has moved the partial withdrawal process to an online process. Faculty are no longer required to sign a paper form acknowledging that they have been notified of the withdrawal; instead, they will receive an automatic email notification from OUE when a student has withdrawn from their course. The partial withdrawal deadline for the Fall 2020 semester is Friday, October 9.

Testing and Evaluation Services for Fall 2020

The Testing and Evaluation Office is open on a very limited basis this fall. Faculty do not need to schedule an appointment to use scanning services but do need to alert the office that they are planning to do so. Faculty should email testingandevaluation@registrar.emory.edu the day they plan to come to the office.

Be sure the testing packet has a completed coversheet, answer key(s), the student answer sheets oriented the same way (use the cut out in the corner), and any special grading instructions.

What to expect:

  1. A drop off box for exams; envelopes and cover sheets will be provided.
  2. Without a cover sheet, student data is likely to get lost. It is essential faculty complete the cover sheet and place it on top of the key and answer sheets before putting them into the envelope. You can expect a turnaround within five business days, but we may be able to expedite this if you let us know you are coming beforehand via email.
  3. Blank answer sheets will be made available upon request via email.
  4. Office hours for drop-offs are 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, with exams being processed on Friday. This means exams received by Thursday COB will be guaranteed results by the following Friday.

Faculty Development Opportunities

University Libraries: Sept. 25 Town Hall and Resources

Emory Libraries will host “Navigating the Emory Libraries in Fall 2020: A Town Hall for Emory Faculty” at noon, Friday, September 25. Register here to attend.

The Emory Libraries administration and staff have worked to expand and reinvent services – both online and in-person – to make sure faculty and students have access to the resources and support needed to prosper in all of your academic pursuits. The At a Glance summary lists services and spaces across all libraries. More detailed information on full resources can be found on the Fall 2020 overview page.

Contribute Teaching Ideas to New Database

The Center for Faculty Development and Excellence has created a new database, “Teaching at Emory: Contributed Teaching Techniques,” to help faculty share teaching ideas and tips with other faculty. To contribute an idea, enter a description of your teaching technique/idea/tip. You’ll also be able to tag your information to describe the type of course, student, etc. This is not necessarily pandemic-specific; teaching techniques of all sorts are welcomed. To contribute an idea, visit the CFDE website.

Halle Institute Collaborative Research Grants Available

The submission deadline for the next cycle of Halle Institute Collaborative Research Grants is Wednesday, September 30. Grants are open to all regular, full-time faculty in any school or discipline. They are designed to foster global research collaborations between faculty partners in different universities.

Faculty are encouraged to apply with the expectation that they will conduct research as planned. The Halle Institute will remain flexible in extending grant completion dates if travel is limited during the full grant period. More information and the application are available on the Halle Institute website.

Physics Machine Shop Now Open as Operational Service Center

As of September 1, the Machine Shop in the Department of Physics fully transitioned to an operational Service Center Core for the university. The Machine Shop charges a flat rate of $25/hr. to all Emory-internal customers for various services related to research equipment and repair needs.

With over 70 years of combined experience, the shop aims to provide exceptional customer service to our Emory community by providing expertise in the areas of milling, welding, turning, and other customization services. For more information about the Machine Shop, please visit the Department of Physics website.

COVID-19 Resources

Testing Now Available for Onboarded Emory employees

Emory has secured additional COVID-19 testing, about 900 per week, for asymptomatic off-campus students as well as faculty and staff who have been approved to be on campus. If you have been approved to be on campus, do not have COVID-19 symptoms, and would like to be tested, you may log into the scheduling portal on the Emory Forward site.

Faculty or staff who show symptoms of COVID-19, or have a concern about exposure to the virus, should call the Emory COVID-19 Information and Nurses Line at 404-71-COVID-19 (404.712.6843) to gain access to evaluation and testing with the assistance of Emory Healthcare. The Emory COVID-19 test scheduling application is restricted to those individuals who have completed the fall 2020 onboarding process. Once the onboarding process is complete, you may have to wait 24 hours for the application data to synchronize before gaining access to scheduling.

Reminder: Masks Required on Campus

To reduce the spread of COVID-19, Emory University now requires that everyone wear face coverings while on campus in both indoor and outdoor settings. For more details about specifically when and where to wear a mask, view Emory’s guidelines for using face coverings.

Reminding others: The health and safety of our community depends on compliance with the new face-covering requirement. Achieving compliance on our campus is everyone’s responsibility. If you see someone on campus who is not wearing a mask, please let them know that face coverings are now required. See Emory University's “How-to" Guide: Reminding Others to Wear Face Coverings for guidance.

Reminder: Faculty/Staff Onboarding for Campus Access

Emory University has established a comprehensive clearance process for faculty and staff who plan to be on the Atlanta and Oxford campuses this fall. The five-step onboarding clearance process can be accessed through the Emory Forward website. Please complete the onboarding tasks if you anticipate that you will be on campus at any time this fall.
