Reception for New and Promoted Faculty - New Location

All Emory College faculty are invited to join Dean Michael A. Elliott from 4 - 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Double Zero in the Emory Village to honor new faculty, promoted faculty, and named chairs.

Faculty Development Opportunities

Call for PERS grant proposals

The Program to Enhance Research and Scholarship (PERS) will consider proposals from regular Emory College faculty for modest seed funding for new research, research travel, other research related activities, and matches for equipment grants. The Fall 2019 deadline is 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17. Proposals must demonstrate, where appropriate, efforts to seek other sources of funding, and will be evaluated on the basis of merit and need.

Hightower Speaker Funds Available

Each year Emory College receive funds from the Hightower endowment, which memorializes the late Robert E. Hightower Sr. This endowment provides funds to bring outstanding visiting lecturers to Emory. The College has typically committed funds of $75,000-$100,000 annually. These include small allocations for partial funding of a single speaker to large amounts to support conferences with several speakers.

Applications for Spring and Summer events are currently being accepted. The deadline to submit your application is Friday, November 15. Applications should be submitted electronically to Dean_of_Faculty@emory.edu. More information about the application process and the application can be found on the Office of Faculty website.

New Faculty Orientation and Luncheon Session

The next orientation and lunch session for new faculty will take place from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in Room 204, Convocation Hall, Tuesday, Sept. 24. Joanne Brzinski, senior associate dean for undergraduate education, will discuss the services and responsibilities of the College’s Office for Undergraduate Education.

Additional monthly luncheons will be held for new faculty throughout the fall and spring semesters and will feature speakers from key areas of the University and College. The full schedule for all faculty meetings can be found on the Office of Faculty website.

Orientation Sessions for New and Returning Department Chairs

The Emory College administration hosts several orientation sessions for new department chairs and program directors to assist them in their development as academic administrators. The first session, an overview of Undergraduate Education Policies, Procedures, and Programs, will be held 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1 in PAIS Room 250. Reimagining Retirement Luncheon Sept. 27

The Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and the Emory Emeritus College are partnering to present "Reimagining Retirement: A Vibrant Intellectual Life Continued" at noon, Friday, Sept. 27 in the Emory Center for Ethics Commons. At this luncheon for current faculty, four faculty who are either recently retired or currently transitioning to retirement will each tell their "retirement stories" and the new intellectual ventures they are pursuing in this extension of the long arc of a faculty career.

Panelists include: Denise Raynor, Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine; Patrick Noonan, Professor in the Practice of Decision and Information Analysis, Goizueta Business School; Ann Rogers, Professor, School of Nursing; and Thomas Flynn, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Philosophy, Emory College. Class Visits

Register your class by Friday, Sept. 13 for our class visitation program, which pairs prospective students with courses of interest from the end of September through the end of November. Courses at the 100 and 200 levels between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. are ideal. Please register through this link.

Faculty Speakers Initiative

Now in its second season, the Emory Faculty Speakers initiative pairs Emory faculty members with local high schools interested in hosting them as guest lecturers. The Speakers initiative has already successfully matched many of our faculty with local schools. High school requests for faculty speakers will be matched through November. Please indicate your interest in this initiative in the faculty participation survey below.

Service Opportunities in OUE for Faculty

Many programs and activities within the Office for Undergraduate Education rely on faculty involvement. Faculty who are seeking service opportunities should consult the OUE’s guide.

Letter Grade/Satisfactory-Unsatisfactory Grading Basis Change Deadline

Students have until Friday, Sept. 13 to make changes to the grading basis for their courses this semester. Note that all courses at Emory College are student choice regarding the grading basis, except for those courses that the Curriculum Committee has provided approval to be strictly letter graded or S/U only. The full grading basis policy can be found in the Course Catalog.

Incomplete Deadline for Spring 2019 Coursework

The incomplete deadline for Spring 2019 coursework is Friday, Sept. 13. After this date, any student with an “I” in a Spring 2019 course will receive “IF” in OPUS except for those courses where an additional extension has been requested. OUE has communicated with affected students encouraging them to work with their faculty members to complete their work on time, or to request an extension if the faculty member is still willing to work with the student beyond the deadline date. If you are working with a student and agree to an extension beyond Sept. 13, please inform Charrie Collins (ckcolli@emory.edu) about the new agreed due date as soon as possible.

Fall Degree Applications Due Friday

The degree application deadline for students intending to graduate in Fall 2019 is Friday, Sep. 13. This notice is to alert you that you may have advisees coming to request your sign-off on their major/minor paperwork for graduation.

College Business Operations: New Location

ECAS Business Operations, which includes Finance Administration, CAPS RAS, IT and Facilities, have relocated to the North Decatur Road Building, 1784 North Decatur Road, Suite 229.

New Meal Plans Available for Faculty and Staff

With the opening of the new Emory Student Center, the Dobbs Common Table (DCT) is now available to all for campus dining. The DCT is the only all-you-care-to-eat dining venue on campus, and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday-Friday and brunch and dinner on weekends. While the DCT offers service on a per-meal purchase basis at the door, faculty and staff can also purchase a block of meals to be used anytime during the year. These meal plans launch this fall and allow the use of the DCT at a significant discount—a 24% average savings over pay-as-you-go regular door pricing. View more details.
