Emory College Staff Service Award Ceremony and Reception Aug. 22

It is time again to recognize the outstanding service of staff in Emory College! The College Staff Service Award Ceremony and Reception for 2018-2019, hosted by Dean Michael Elliott, will take place at 3 p.m., Thursday, August 22 in the Atwood Chemistry Building, second floor atrium area.

In 2006, Emory College instituted the Emory College Service Awards to be presented each year in recognition of College employees who complete milestone years of service (multiples of 5 years) at Emory University. The 2018-2019 Emory College Staff Consortium Employee of the Year Award recipient will also be announced at the celebration. All faculty and staff of Emory College are encouraged to attend to add their congratulations and enjoy some ice cream.

Faculty Development Opportunities

New Faculty Orientation & Luncheon Series

New Faculty Orientation takes place 2- 4 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27 in Convocation Hall, room 208. The orientation will be facilitated by Dean Elliott and will feature an overview and introduction to key College and Laney Graduate School administrators and their respective offices. Orientation will be followed by the University Convocation at 4:30 p.m. in the New Student Center. All new faculty are strongly encouraged to attend.

Additional monthly luncheons will be held for new faculty throughout the fall and spring semesters and will feature speakers from key areas of the University and College. The full schedule can be found on the Office of Faculty website.

Orientation Sessions for New and Returning Department Chairs

The Emory College administration hosts several orientation sessions for new department chairs and program directors to assist them in their development as academic administrators.

The first session, an overview of Undergraduate Education Policies, Procedures, and Programs, will be held 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13 in a location to be announced. The full schedule can be found on the Office of Faculty website.

Faculty Searches in 2019-2020

Reminder to anyone involved in a 2019-2020 faculty search that detailed information on the process and required forms can be found on the Office of Faculty website.

Faculty Recruitment for Excellence and Diversity

The FY20 Workshop on Faculty Recruitment for Excellence and Diversity will be held 1 -3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20, in the Jones Room, Woodruff Library. All department chairs, lead staff, and search committee chairs involved in FY20 searches should attend. Search committee members are also encouraged to attend. Academic Year Salary Recovery Program Forms Due Sept. 27

The Academic Year Salary Recovery forms deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. Completed forms will be reviewed and recovery funds distributed no later than the end of fall semester. If you have questions regarding the AYS Recovery program, please contact Connie Copeland, ORFS Administrator.

Orientation and Pre-Major Faculty Advising

New Student Orientation begins Saturday, Aug. 24. The entire Orientation schedule may be found online and you are encouraged to download the Guidebook App for the most up-to-date programs, times and locations.

NOTE: All faculty will be assigned new first-year advisees and will meet on Monday, Aug. 26 between 10:45 a.m. -1 p.m. Please check with your department’s PACE Liaison for any questions.

New Course Atlas Now Available

The new University Course Atlas is live. The University Course Atlas, a product of the partnership between the Office of the University Registrar, Emory UP, and the academic schools, replaces the College Course Atlas with a one-stop shop for course scheduling. It includes all courses, in all schools. It features highly improved search functionality and course displays. If you have questions or comments about this new system, please contact Steve Savage, steve.savage@emory.edu.

Final Exam Policy

In February 2019, the Curriculum, Education and Assessment Committee passed a policy regarding Final Exams, the exam period and the rules around these activities. This policy codified long-standing practice within Emory College and takes effect this term, Fall 2019. You can view the policy on the Course Catalog. Contact Dean Jason Ciejka, jciejka@emory.edu, with questions.

New Instructor Info Sessions

OUE Deans Jason Ciejka and Cora MacBeth will host two information session for TAs and instructors who are new to Emory College. They will provide an overview of the Office for Undergraduate Education (OUE), review academic policies, and provide information about the Honor Code. Two sessions are available at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27 in White Hall 111. Please fill out this form to RSVP.

Inclement Weather Policy – Dates for Fall 2019

Due to the increasing number of inclement weather/university closure days in recent years, Emory College developed an Inclement Weather Make-Up Policy. The full policy can be found on the OUE Faculty Resources web page. Should there be a need to enact the policy in Fall 2019, the following dates have been pre-identified as the make-up dates:

  • Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10
  • Saturday Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17

OUE will send appropriate communications to faculty, staff and students in the event the policy is enacted. Questions regarding policy can be directed to Dean Jason Ciejka, jciejka@emory.edu.

Writing for the Web Workshops Available

College web editors and other staff are encouraged to attend a “Writing for the Web” workshop in advance of the rollout of the new department web templates this fall. In this session, web editors will review the fundamentals of writing for the web as well as cover and practice techniques that convert dense web pages into scannable pages to better serve your audiences. RSVP on the Emory College Communications website.

The next sessions will be held Monday, Sept. 9 and Friday, Sept. 20 from 10:30 a.m. – Noon in Woodruff Library Room 314 for both sessions. For questions about the new template process, contact Kizzy Williams, kizzy.williams@emory.edu.
