Information for International Applicants

Emory University welcomes international students to apply to the 2009 Pre-College Program. Emory is home to many students and scholars from around the world. The University values the significant contributions to campus learning these students and scholars make. International visitors foster awareness of and respect for other cultures and bring unique perspectives into the classroom.

Program Eligibility

International student applicants must be rising juniors or seniors in high school, or the equivalent, and at least sixteen years of age by the start of the program.

The international student applicant must have above-average secondary school grades and excellent English language skills to ensure success in the college-level classroom. If your first language is not English, you must have taken the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) and scored approximately 100 on the IBT (internet-based test). Other recognized English language qualification test scores, such as the Cambridge exams, may be submitted as well.

Application and Admission

To be considered for admission, international students must  complete and submit the following:

• The Pre-College Program online application. Apply Now!

• $50.00 application fee, submitted and paid online.

 • A complete official secondary school transcript with certified English translations.

• An academic recommendation from a secondary school teacher or counselor stating your English language proficiency level. Download the recommendation form (PDF)

• A writing sample submitted with the teacher/counselor recommendation. Download the writing sample form (PDF).

The preferred application deadline is April 1, 2009 (EXTENDED DEADLINE).  International students are encouraged to apply early to ensure a spot in the class and residence hall.  Your application will be reviewed and considered once all the required admission materials are received.

Upon acceptance to the Pre-College Program

Upon acceptance, the Pre-College Program will send the applicant an official letter of acceptance certifying that he or she has been approved for admission and his or her approved course of study.  The letter will confirm the program dates, pre-arrival information, and the tuition, fees, and payment schedule.

International Students accepted to the Pre-College Program for credit study (six-week summer session)

Emory University will process or issue forms I-20 and IAP-66 (request for visa) once the accepted international student agrees to attend 2009 Pre-College six-week program and pays the required $350 tuition deposit.  All remaining tuition and fees must be paid in full on or before April 1, 2009.

International students accepted to the six-week Pre-College Program  should not make plans to leave his or her country until he or she has received a letter of acceptance and either a Form I-20 or IAP-66 from Emory University.

International students attending the six-week, for-credit summer school program will enter the U.S. on the F-1 student visa under the jurisdiction of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations. Foreign students may not enter the U.S. unless the visa entry has been made in the passport. In order to receive a visa to enter the U.S., most students attending the six-week summer program will receive a Form 1-20. After receiving the Form I-20, students must go online and pay the SEVIS fee and obtain a receipt.  With the SEVIS fee receipt and the Form I-20, students apply for the F-1 visa at a U.S. consulate unless the student is from a country not subject to visa requirements.

Upon arrival at a port of entry to the U.S., all students must present a valid passport (valid for at least six months from the date of entry) and Form I-20 to receive the Arrival/Departure Record (Form I-94). Permission to stay in the U.S. will be for the duration of the student’s status as a bona fide non-immigrant student.

Students who are dual citizens (and will enter the U.S. on their U.S. passport) or are U.S. permanent residents (Green Card holders) do not need to apply for a visa.

International Students accepted to the Pre-College Program for non-credit study (two or four week courses)

International Students accepted to the two-week or four-week non-credit courses who are citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program may travel to the U.S. in the Waiver for Tourist (WT) immigration status. They must have an electronic passport and an approved authorization via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA™).  Please consult the website of the U.S. consulate in your country for more information.

Students from non-participating countries must obtain a B2 visa from a U.S. consulate in their country. Please consult the website of a U.S. consulate in your country for instructions on applying.

All international students admitted to the Pre-College Program and traveling to the United States must ensure they have a valid passport for travel to and from the program for the duration of the program.

International and non-U.S. citizens participating in the Pre-College program are required to have health insurance. Short term health insurance may be available through Seven Corners, Inbound Guest, www.sevencorners.com
