Graduating Students

Students graduating from Emory College of Arts and Sciences and/or participating in Emory Commencement should carefully review the information below.

Graduation

Graduation Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring all graduation requirements, as listed in the Emory College of Arts and Sciences Catalog, are complete by the end of their last term in the College. Students can track their progress towards degree in OPUS or by contacting their major department.

Graduation Application

Students must apply to graduate. At the start of the expected graduation term, a student will receive a link to the Online Graduation Application. Students can refer to the Graduation Application Guidelines for further information, checklist, and required documents to complete the application.

The deadlines for degree application are term specific and can be found on the website for the Office of the Registrar.

Application review and certification occurs after the deadline by the Office for Undergraduate Education. Our team will only contact you if we have questions about your application.

All Commencement program and event information is available on the University Commencement Website, which also provides information on student regalia and preparation information, local attraction information, and details of inclement weather plans in the event of poor weather conditions.

All Commencement-related communications are sent to the Emory email address for degree applicants. Students are encouraged to check their university email regularly for commencement updates, event information, and relevant logistical information.

Commencement Frequently Asked Questions

I cannot attend Commencement. How will I receive my diploma?
Graduates will be able to collect their diploma at the conclusion of the College ceremony. Students who do not participate in Commencement will have their diploma mailed to their permanent address in OPUS.

Students not participating must also complete the Request to Graduate in absentia form.

For students graduating in August or December, diplomas will be mailed to their permanent mailing address listed in OPUS.
How long should my guest plan to stay in Atlanta for the graduation ceremonies?

Various graduation events beginning Friday are open to parents and guests. Under normal conditions, commencement exercises for Emory College of Arts and Sciences conclude by 1:30 p.m. on Monday. In the event of inclement weather, the College events may occur earlier or later in the day, ending no later than 5 p.m. Parents and guests should refer to the inclement weather plan and make appropriate arrangements.

I graduated in August or December and want to take part in Commencement. What do I do?

If you wish to take part in the Commencement exercises prior to your graduation, please complete the Request for Permission to Walk form.

If you wish to take part in the Commencement exercises in the year following your graduation (i.e. the May after your August or December graduation) please contact Emily Daniel.

Do my parents/guests need tickets for commencement?

Parents and guests do not need tickets for commencement under regular circumstances. In the event of heavy rain or severe weather (high winds, flooding, extreme temperatures, etc.) the College diploma ceremony will move inside. Two guest tickets per student are allocated for the indoor ceremony. Pick-up of these tickets occurs in advance of commencement and collection information will be communicated to students in advance by email.

In the event of light rain or drizzle, the ceremony will take place as planned. Guests are encouraged to bring ponchos/small umbrellas.

May I study abroad during the summer semester after Commencement?

Graduating seniors are eligible to participate in summer study abroad. Students can defer graduation until the end of the summer to receive financial aid or to complete final requirements to graduation. Students who defer graduation are still eligible to walk with their class with permission from the Office for Undergraduate Education. Emory summer study abroad courses would count toward the cumulative GPA. Students currently receiving financial aid or a courtesy scholarship would remain eligible.

Visit the Study Abroad website for more details.

Is disability seating available?

For guests with mobility impairments, special seating tickets may be requested using the form found under the Disability Access and Seating tab on the University Commencement Website.

Where can I view or purchase photographs from the Emory College Diploma Ceremony or Honors Ceremony?

Emory College works with commencement photography specialists GradImages to photograph graduates during Commencement events. GradImages will contact graduates directly in the week after Commencement. Proofs and information on viewing the photographs of the Emory College Diploma Ceremony (and, in some cases, Honors Ceremony) will be mailed to the student’s home address of record, as well as to the permanent email address provided by the student.
