Guidelines

Follow these steps to complete the transient study application and credit transfer process:

Please visit the Transient Study Frequently Asked Questions section for more information or email questions to transientstudy@emory.edu.

Determine if the host institutions you plan to attend have their own transient study applications and permissions forms requiring the signature of a College Official. Submit these forms with your Emory transient study application.

Research content of host institution’s courses to see if they would fulfill Emory College of Arts and Science's requirements. Emory will accept credits from accredited institutions, including two and four-year community colleges

Research Emory courses through the Emory College of Arts and Sciences Course Atlas to find courses you wish to fulfill.

  • On-line courses may be approved if they are offered by accredited institutions and are courses which are also offered in residence (i.e., not courses only offered to on-line students). All on-line language courses must be pre-approved by the relevant department.

    • The following departments have informed Transient Study that they will not accept on-line courses: MATH, Computer Science and QTM.  Language courses (other than Latin), which require language practice must be pre-approved by the relevant department. See Critical Note Regarding Foreign Languages section.
  • Students may fulfill General Education Requirements (GER) courses through Domestic Transient Study with the exception of the following courses which may not be taken outside of Emory College of Arts and Sciences:

    • Area I. First-Year Seminar (FSEM)
    • Area III. Continuing Writing Requirement (WRT)
    • Area VIII. Personal Health Courses (HTH 100)
    • Area IX Principles of Physical Fitness (PED)

The First-Year Writing Requirement can be taken before or during the freshmen year and the summer directly after freshman year.

PE Elective courses can be taken at another school to satisfy the GER requirement but the credits will not transfer to Emory College.

  • Students who plan to use transient study courses to satisfy other programs' requirements should consult with the program advisors to ensure the feasibility of these courses. For example, the Emory Goizueta School of Business will not allow students to take financial accounting (BUS 210) through transient study; this course must be taken at Emory.

Review Transient Study courses with your advisor of record (check OPUS), or an OUE Academic Advisor.  Your Advisor’s signatures is not required for transient study course approval.

Submit Foreign Language Placement approval, if applicable.

  • Students must receive language placement approval from the desired language department (e.g., GER 101-Elementary German l, the language placement form or email should be obtained from Emory's German Studies Department).

  • Submit placement to transientstudy@emory.edu or send via campus mail to Domestic Transient Study, White Hall 300.

  • A language placement letter is not required for those students who have taken the same foreign language while at Emory, or have earned any transfer credit for that language.

  • To download a copy of the language placement form, please click Transient Study Language Approval.

Submit Payment of Application Charge.

  • Submit a one-time non-refundable $100.00 application charge to Emory University. Students are responsible for payment of tuition and fees to the host institution. Follow the instructions on your application confirmation e-mail or click the "Pay Now" button on the Application Page

Request a transcript from host institution be sent to Domestic Transient Study. Colleges/universities do not send official transcripts automatically: there are privacy laws requiring institutions to get a student's permission in writing to release official records.

The Domestic Transient Study office can receive transcripts either electronically via the eSCRIP_SAFE transcript delivery system or by mail to the following address only:
