Award provides: A portion of educational costs, including tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees up to $7,500 per academic year; recipients receive annual funding for each remaining year as an undergraduate.

- Have a GPA of at least a 3.0 (the average GPA of applicants in recent years has been a 3.88, and winners, a 3.94)
- Be pursuing full-time study during the current academic year
- Intend to pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering (students who plan to seek a clinical M.D. are not eligible)
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program is designed to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields. Successful applicants must have substantial coursework, research, experience, and/or internships related to a clearly defined career path in a STEM field, as well as substantive laboratory experience that shows a progression of skills and duties over time.
