Commencement 2018

Faculty Procession

Emory University’s 173rd Commencement exercises will take place Monday, May 14 starting at 9 a.m. Faculty members who intend to participate in the Commencement exercises are asked to line up in full regalia no later than 8:30 a.m. on Commencement morning. The faculty will line up at the Anne Register Jones Courtyard (located between the Jones Center and the Oxford Road building).

The procession, led by the Atlanta Pipe Band and Chief University Marshal Bobbi Patterson, steps off promptly at 9 a.m. The Emory College of Arts and Sciences Diploma Ceremony will follow at 10:45 a.m. on the Quad.

College Faculty Awards

Several Emory College of Arts & Sciences faculty will be honored during the central Commencement exercises and College graduation ceremony. They include:

  • Emory University Exemplary Teacher Award (formerly known as Scholar-Teacher Award)

Michelle Lampl, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Anthropology and director of the Center for the Study of Human Health.

  • George P. Cuttino Award for Excellence in Mentoring

Eric Weeks, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Physics and chair of the Department of Physics, incoming director of the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence

  • Emory Williams Teaching Awards
Valérie Loichot, Professor of French and English
Tracy Scott, Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology and QEP Director
Jose Soria, Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemistry

Upcoming Administrative Deadlines

Due Dates for Senior Grades

Grades for graduating seniors are due from faculty on the following dates:

  • Final exams on or before May 8: Senior grades due by 10 a.m., Thursday, May 10.
  • Final exams on May 9: Senior grades due by 10 a.m., Friday, May 11.

If you have a final exam for a large class on May 8 with a significant number of seniors, contact Senior Associate Dean Joanne Brzinski (poljb@emory.edu) to request an extension on the reporting deadline as needed. If granted, senior grades will be due by 10 a.m. on Friday, May 11.

The deadline for all other grade submission is Sunday, May 20.

Faculty and Staff Evaluations

Faculty and staff evaluations for the 2017-2018 academic year should be completed by May 18.

QEP Evidence Week - Call for Speakers

Emory’s Quality Enhancement Project (QEP) invites proposals from individual or pairs of faculty to participate in Fall 2018 Evidence Week. Evidence Week is a part of the QEP that introduces first-year students to the Nature of Evidence in an interdisciplinary academic setting. During fall semester, students will engage in an interactive session with pairs of faculty (representing different disciplinary areas) discussing an issue around evidence from their different disciplinary perspectives. Each presenter will receive a $300 contribution to their research/teaching account. Applications are due May 21. To apply, submit the following to qep.director@emory.edu:

  • Name/Department for each applicant;
  • Brief statement (1-2 paragraphs) about how you would address your proposed topic;
  • (If applying with a partner): Brief statement about how you plan to integrate your presentations.

White Hall Survey - Faculty Feedback Needed

The College has engaged Eskew+Dumez+Ripple Architects to complete a feasibility study for a programmatic redesign of Goodrich C. White Hall. Faculty who teach in or otherwise use White Hall are encouraged to complete this short survey to help direct our efforts. This survey takes less than 5 minutes and should be completed by May 18. IT Support Services

Take the Survey

Emory College IT Support is conducting a survey of faculty and staff to better determine what support enhancements are needed to better address IT needs in the College. The ECCS IT Support Survey is designed to be anonymous (unless you would like to provide your contact information) and should take less than 2 minutes to complete. The survey will remain open until May 30.

Emory College IT introduces New Helpdesk Portal

With the launch of the new Helpdesk Portal, students, faculty, and staff will have one click access to a personal support portal. When you submit a Helpdesk ticket to echelp@emory.edu, all Helpdesk notifications will contain a direct link to your ticket on the Helpdesk Portal. Just click your ticket number embedded in your Helpdesk notification, log into the Helpdesk Portal using your Emory University username and password to manage your tickets at any time.

With no waiting, you can:

  • View the current status of your ticket
  • Request a status update from your Local Support Tech.
  • Send a message to Local Support when you add information to your ticket.
  • Send a message to Local Support when you add attachments to your ticket.
  • Review the resolution details of your ticket.

Customers who have questions about how to use the Service Portal – including how to log in, submit a ticket, place an order, check on the status of a ticket – can explore Service Now Portal instructions. If you have questions, comments, or concerns about ServiceNow, please send an e-mail to echelp@emory.edu.

College Website Support

New Department Website Template: Content Review Requirement

The Emory College Office of Communications expects to begin moving College department websites to a new template this fall. As a prerequisite to move to the new template, all departments must conduct a ROT analysis of their current website to clean out Redundant, Obsolete and Trivial content. This will allow departments to refresh and clear out existing content and help ensure a smoother transition to the new template.

Once departments have conducted their review and taken all of the following actions on this ROT Analysis Checklist, they should contact Jill Hennecy (jill.hennecy@emory.edu or 7-9903) to review the analysis and be put in the queue for transfer to the new template. More information about how to conduct a ROT analysis is available on the Communications website.

Cascade Website Training for New Users

The Emory College Office of Communications will hold Cascade web training sessions this summer for Arts and Sciences staff and faculty who maintain department websites:

  • Cascade Training for New Users
    June 13, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Cascade Training for New Users
    July 10, 2 – 4 p.m.
  • Cascade Training for New Users
    August 15, 1 -3 p.m.

 All classes take place in Room 314, Woodruff Library, Electronic Classroom (across from the Jones Room). Register for the class on the Emory College Office of Communications website. Contact senior web producer Jill Hennecy with any questions about the training.
