One Sociology course or consent of instructor.
This course is an introduction to research design in the social sciences. Topics include conceptualization and measurement, probability and nonprobability sampling, experimental and survey designs, ethnographic methods, secondary and historical data analysis, and ethical standards in social research. The course has three main objectives: First, you will learn how to translate theoretical issues into empirical questions. Second, you will recognize the strengths and limitations of different methods and learn how to choose appropriate methods given your research goals. Third, you will gain actual experience in data collection and analysis. The overall goal is to provide you with the practical skills needed for being a discerning consumer and producer of social research data.
