Catalog Description: Spring. Prerequisites: Hebrew 301 or permission of instructor. Sixth in a series of courses designed to teach modern Hebrew, advanced study of grammar, vocabulary, and stylistics; intensive practice speaking and writing Hebrew.

Semester Details: The course focuses on Israeli cultural representations, which draw on, utilize and echo the Hebrew Bible. Using a broad spectrum of sources – literature, visual arts, popular music and films – the class will examine the role of the Hebrew Bible in shaping Israeli culture and identity. Reflecting upon the stories of Cain and Abel, The Binding of Isaac, Samson, David and Goliath, Job and others, we will explore how these biblical myths are intertwined with modern contexts, such as the Holocaust and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
