Let faculty from Emory’s science departments help you shape a stimulating learning experience. If you are uncertain about where to begin, contact the director of undergraduate study (DUS) from the department you are most interested in (see list below).

You can also contact academic advisors from the Office of Undergraduate Education with additional questions (see contact info at the bottom of this page).

Science students who need help with introductory math and science courses can also sign up for specially designed learning programs available from the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Academic Support for Science Students

At Emory we believe in providing science students the academic support that leads to success in introductory math and science courses.

If you are not satisfied with your performance in these courses, we offer semester-long group problem-solving sessions. Data from previous years has clearly shown that students who participate in five or more problem-solving sessions perform significantly better in the final exam. We believe the benefits from these group sessions -- working in a more socially engaging setting, meeting new friends and developing relationships that grow into study groups for other classes -- typically outweigh the benefits of one-on-one tutoring help.

In small group sessions run by trained student facilitators, students in introductory courses will learn the basic survival skills of problem solving and analytical thinking: learning how to analyze the problem, looking for data, identifying relationships and formulae needed to solve the problem, communicating the analyses of the problem to their group, identifying weaknesses and learning to seek help when necessary.

In addition, students who participate in these problem-solving sessions and who perform well in their fall-semester course will have an opportunity to serve as the next year’s student leaders by participating in a two-credit seminar, Science Leadership and Learning.

Academic support is available in all science departments for the following introductory courses (Chem 141, 142, Bio 141, 142, Phys 141, 142, Chem 171, 172, Chem 221, 222)

Please talk to the director of undergraduate study in your particular science or math department to receive more information on how to participate in these sessions.

Clued In

If you are a science student at Emory, you will want to browse through the information in Clued In: A survival guide for the science student at Emory (PDF). There is information to guide you from your very first days on campus. Use your Emory network ID to access and download the guide.
