Meet Your Faculty Mentors

Emory College has robust mentoring programs for tenure-track assistant professors and for assistant and associate teaching professors. Experienced senior faculty lead cross-disciplinary mentoring clusters, supporting faculty in their professional growth. Meet the current mentors here. Additional programming for associate professors is coming soon. If you would like to join this initiative, either as a mentor or as a member of a mentoring cluster, please email dean_of_faculty@emory.edu.

Incomplete Deadline for Spring 2023

The deadline to resolve incomplete grades from Fall 2022 is this Friday, January 28. Please enter updated grades in OPUS no later than Friday, Feb. 3. If you have discussed extending the deadline with a student, or have questions about incomplete grades from terms prior to fall 2022, please contact oue.records@emory.edu.

Other important deadlines to note include:

• Graduation Application Deadline: Friday, February 17 (Questions about the process can be directed to graduation@emory.edu) 

The Sophomore Summit: Faculty Speaker Needed

The Pathways Center is hosting its first Sophomore Summit February 17-18 at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Ga. The Sophomore Summit provides all Emory sophomore students in Atlanta and Oxford a safe space to connect with peers, hear from professors and alums, and discover concrete next steps for their future. This event is free for sophomore students. Registration is now open.

Call for Speakers: The Pathways Center is seeking a faculty member in the arts to join as a guest speaker at the Summit. If you are interested, please contact Greg Hollinger.

It's Awards Season: Nominations Sought for Annual Awards

Nominations are now open for faculty and student awards given during the university’s Commencement and the Emory College graduation ceremony.

• 2022-2023 Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award

Emory College faculty, students, and alumni are encouraged to submit nominations for the prestigious 2022-23 Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Awards. Nominators should submit a one-page letter justifying the nomination and include specific information about the nominee’s teaching. Please send nomination letters to the Dean_of_Faculty@emory.edu email address with the subject line “Emory Williams Nomination” by Friday, February 3. Please take the time to identify people most deserving of this honor.  

• 2022-2023 Cuttino Award for Mentoring

The Cuttino Award is named in honor of the late George Peddy Cuttino, a member of our history department from 1952 to 1984. The successful recipient of this prestigious award will be a regular member of the College faculty and should exhibit a similar record of exceptional mentoring of students.

Nominations are welcome from any regular faculty member of Emory College. Your one-page nomination letter should include specific information about the nominee’s record as a mentor at Emory.  Send your letter to  Dean_of_Faculty@emory.edu with “Cuttino Award” in the subject line. Nominations are due by Friday, March 3.  Those not chosen for the award this year will be held and reconsidered for three years. 

• McMullan Award

 Emory College is soliciting nominations for the Lucius Lamar McMullan Award. The McMullan Award is meant to honor a graduating senior of uncommon stature in the eyes of the Emory community. Academic achievement is an important criterion, but not the sole measure of excellence. The recipient should also demonstrate outstanding citizenship, exceptional leadership, and singular qualities of mind and character. The winner of the McMullan Award will receive $30,000 at the time of graduation to be used for any purpose of their choosing.

Nominations should be submitted via the nomination form by Thursday, March 2. Please see the call for nominations or email Robert Torre, rtorre@emory.edu, for more information.

• Brittain Award

The 2023 M.L. Brittain Award nomination process led by Campus Life is now open. The award is given annually at Commencement to one undergraduate and one graduate student who have performed the most “significant, meritorious and devoted service to Emory University.” Fall 2023 or spring 2023 graduates are eligible for nomination.

Nomination letters should be submitted to Sandra Edwards, sandra.edwards@emory.edu, by Friday, February 17. Please see the call for nominations for more information about the award. 

• Emory University 2023 Award of Distinction  

The Award of Distinction Program recognizes staff members who have consistently demonstrated outstanding job performance and who have made specific contributions that have impacted their department/school or the university. The recognized honorees will be invited to a special dinner hosted by President Fenves and receive a $1,000 award. 

All regular full-time and part-time staff or post-docs, who have been employed for at least one year are eligible to be nominated for the Award of Distinction. Emory Healthcare employees, faculty, faculty equivalents, librarians and retirees are not eligible.

Nominations should be based on consistent excellence in the performance of job duties and responsibilities and should cite examples of how the employee has demonstrated: 

1. Service and contributions in the work environment that have been rendered above and beyond the call of duty, and/or 
2. Exemplary personal qualities that have enhanced the overall effectiveness of, or public regard for, the services provided by the department or Emory University. 

All nominations must be received by 5 p.m., Monday, February 13. More information, full criteria, and how to submit nominations are available on the Human Resources website. If you have questions, please contact Melissa Morgan at melissa.morgan@emory.edu.   

Call for Named Chairs Nominations

Please consider nominating your colleagues for consideration as named chairs in 2023-2024. Nominations play a crucial role in helping identify faculty deserving of further recommendation. In particular, there are three Winship Distinguished Research Awards available.  Generally speaking, nominees should not already be holders of named chairs. If you wish to nominate a member of your faculty, please submit a brief letter of nomination (no more than one page) and a copy of their detailed CV to Dean_of_Faculty@emory.edu by Wednesday, March 1. Nominations that include letters of support (no more than one page) from more than one faculty are encouraged, although all nominations will be considered carefully. For more information on available named chairs please see Funding & Awards (emory.edu) on the Office of Faculty website.

Join ILA's LINC Info Session Feb. 3

All Emory College faculty are invited to attend the ILA’s HHMI LINC Initiative Info-session at 2 p.m., Friday, February 3 in Callaway S420 to learn more about LINC courses, the LINC faculty workshop in May, and how to apply to develop a LINC course. LINC (Learning Through Inclusive Collaboration) courses seek to leverage existing independent courses by pairing faculty from different disciplines to create points of intersection, convergences, or links, between the two courses. This event will also feature presentations from past LINC participants and a reception.

Applications for the LINC Symposium May 9 and the Faculty Workshop on May 10-11 are due Friday, March 3. Participation in the workshop will lead directly to faculty teaching a paired LINC course during the 2023-24 academic year. Faculty selected for the workshop will receive a $2,000 stipend. Be In the Know: Emory Worklife Benefits & Resources Workshop Feb. 8

Learn more about how Emory University supports its employees with a Zoom session from Human Resources from noon-1 p.m., Wednesday, February 8, which will include a broad overview of the family-centered benefits/resources available to faculty and staff. Register for this event today. Information covered includes:

• Child related issues: finding a center, childcare discounts, locating a nanny, tutoring assistance & discounts, back up care, lactation resources and summer camp
• Caring for an adult: services include one-on-one coaching, specialized research feature, licensed in-home assessment, support groups, connection to community resources, includes nationwide access
• Financial Wellness: education and tools to guide an employee through paying off debt to pursuing retirement (and everything in between)
• Flexibility: flexible work options, tools, resources, and consultation.

Final Reminder: Deadlines for Leave Requests

Leave of Absence Requests Due January 31

Faculty can now complete their individual leave requests through a Qualtrics Faculty Leave Request  survey. Requests are due by Tuesday, January 31. 

This survey is to be used for all leaves of absence already approved or planned for the 2023-2024 year – pre-tenure, regular, special, parental leave, medical, sabbatical, and post-tenure – including those that are externally funded or unpaid.

The guidelines for leave applications are available on the Office of Faculty website. Please note that the guidelines include an explanation of the requirement that faculty applying for regular sabbaticals and those undergoing tenure review anticipating leaves must also apply for funding from a source external to Emory. A research abstract and a copy of the external application materials will be required as part of the leave request. The guidelines also include a procedure, in exceptional cases, for requesting a waiver from this policy. Associate Professor Completion Leave Requests Due January 31

The College administration is once again offering a very limited number of competitive leave opportunities for associate professors who have a major project nearing completion. These one-semester leaves, funded by the College, are intended for associate professors who have been in rank at least four years and who will be able to use this semester to complete a major piece of scholarship that will help to make a strong case for promotion.  

Time since previous leave of absence will be part of the consideration. Only those faculty members who can complete the project within a year from being on leave should apply. If the project is not completed within one year following the completion leave, the sabbatical clock will be reset, such that the faculty member may be eligible for the next sabbatical after six years of additional service. These leaves are not intended to take the place of externally funded leaves, and they may be combined with externally funded leaves to create a full-year’s leave. They may not, however, be combined with a regular sabbatical or with any leave that requires funding from the College. In addition, we have typically not awarded completion leaves to faculty who are already eligible for a regular sabbatical.  As with all leaves funded by the College, applicants must agree to return to Emory for at least one year following the leave.

Applications for Associate Professor Completion Leaves should include a two-three page description of your project that includes specific details about the progress you’ve already made on this project and a schedule for completion. Your application should also include a list of your recent leaves, and a brief letter of support from your chair attesting to the progress you’ve already made and explaining the department’s plan for covering your courses during the leave. Departments must agree to cover at least one of the courses without requesting money for temporary faculty. Applications for leaves during the 2023-2024 academic year are due Tuesday, January 31. They should be sent to the Dean_of_Faculty@emory.edu email address with the subject line "Completion Leaves."
