Undergraduate Education: Upcoming Deadlines, Carter Town Hall

Add/Drop/Swap Ends, Extended Drop Period Begins

Add/Drop/Swap ended Wednesday night for all students. Beginning at 8 a.m. today, Thursday, September 8, students will be able to petition for a course drop beyond the end of the ADS Period. These requests will be reviewed by OUE to ensure that the student won’t be placing themselves in academic jeopardy with this late action by falling below full-time enrolled status or inadvertently causing delays in their academic progress. The extended drop process will end at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27.

Academic Advisors are available by appointment via College Connect or during virtual drop-in hours (M-Th, 2 p.m.- 4 p.m.) to answer student questions.

The full academic calendar for fall 2022 can be found on the OUE Website. Additional important dates for faculty can be found on “Important Dates for Faculty” document.

Carter Town Hall Attendance Needs

The Carter Town Hall is an annual Emory tradition, taking place this year on Monday, September 19, where members of the first-year class have an opportunity to engage in an interactive dialogue with a figure of national or international significance. This year’s Carter Town Hall features social justice advocate Megan Rapinoe, two-time World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist in soccer.

It is highly encouraged that all members of the first-year class attend this event. Faculty are asked to provide as much flexibility as they can around attendance, or the ability to make up work that would fall during this event. Students will meet with their Orientation groups beginning at 6 p.m. to enter the town hall, and the event will last until 9 p.m. If you have questions about the event, please contact either Jason Ciejka or Shari Obrentz. Thank you considering the request to support our students attending this signature event. Livestreaming will be available for all Emory community members to join. Registration is required.

Faculty Search Committees: Implicit Biases and Best Practices Workshop

All Faculty Search Committee members should sign up for ONE of the specific sessions offered below, preferably as a group. Alternatively, the search committee chair may arrange a session for their search committee by contacting the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI).

Teaching Resources and Opportunities

Recording Your Classroom

As a follow-up to Dean Freeman’s email regarding hybrid/remote learning requests, the Emory College Online team would like to highlight some resources available to support your students if they need to miss class due to sickness or other issues.

Want to share classroom recordings with your students?

While recording class sessions is not required, you may want to consider the resources available in Emory College to share classroom recordings with your students. Panopto is Emory College’s new comprehensive video management tool and is an excellent resource to create ad-hoc or scheduled recordings of your in-person classroom sessions to share with your students.

While Zoom is a good option to record synchronous online/hybrid engagement, including any time the entire class meeting must shift online, Panopto is a better resource to create recordings of your in-person classroom sessions. Check out the Panopto Faculty Hub and Should I Use Zoom or Panopto? guide.

Pedagogy Mini-grants Available

Emory College offers mini-grants to support Emory College faculty teaching. A mini-grant should be used for an activity directly related to a class you are teaching during the semester. Anyone currently teaching in the College is eligible, including tenure-track, lecture-track, adjunct, and visiting faculty as well as graduate students. The request can be up to $350. The link to request funds is Qualtrics Survey | Qualtrics Experience Management.

Faculty Series: The Honor Code

This fall, faculty are invited to join Jason Ciejka and Blaire Wilson from OUE for a series of discussions about the Honor Code and academic integrity. Last spring, the Emory College student body voted to adopt a new Undergraduate Academic Honor Code that applies to all students in Emory College, Goizueta Business School, and Oxford College and takes effect this fall semester. The first session, ”The Teachable Moment: Talking to Your Class about the Importance of Academic Integrity” takes place from noon-1 p.m., Friday, September 30, in White Hall 200. To RSVP for this session, click here.

CFDE’s Learning Design Lab

Is your department or program working on any curriculum or course development projects? The CFDE is piloting a new consultancy that focuses on supporting departments and programs as they redesign high-enrollment courses or curriculums.

CFDE provides support as you focus on student-centered needs like transparency, engagement, equitable assessment, and accessibility. We will also partner with faculty who are offering interdisciplinary courses with multiple instructors. The program is designed for groups of three or more faculty and provides support for all stages of project development. For more information, including examples of past projects, please visit the CFDE website.

Global Ties: Conversation Partner Program Now Available

Faculty and students looking for a way to connect with other members of the Emory community through language, culture, and independent excursions are invited to join Global Ties: Conversation Partner Program organized by OUE Academic Advising and Campus Life. The program matches all applicants with an international or domestic partner to cultivate friendship, strengthen intercultural exchange, and provide an opportunity for monthly social events. In addition, Global Ties sends out a bi-weekly newsletter to share international news, highlight partner interviews, and provide conversations starters on a designated theme each issue.

All applications are accepted on a rolling basis with a semester-long commitment to your designated conversation partner. Apply here. If you have any questions, contact Amanda Doherty (amanda.doherty@emory.edu) or find her in White Hall 214.

Nominations Open for International Awards

The Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives (GSI) invites nominations for three prestigious awards from Emory University. The international awards honor the achievements of a faculty member, an international alumnus/a, and a staff member, and they recognize the extraordinary work that enriches Emory University’s global impact. These awards include the Marion V. Creekmore Award for Internationalization, the Sheth Distinguished International Alumni Award, and the International Outreach Award. Visit the GSI website to submit a nomination and view the lists of previous award winners. Please submit nominations by Friday, September 30.

Hightower Speaker Funds Available

Each year Emory College receives funds from the Hightower endowment, which memorializes the late Robert E. Hightower Sr. This endowment provides funds to bring outstanding visiting lecturers to Emory.

The College has typically committed funds of $75,000-$100,000 annually. These include small allocations for partial funding of a single speaker to larger amounts to support conferences with several speakers.

Faculty are invited to make requests for funding for spring and summer events by Tuesday, November 15. The committee meets once a semester to review requests. Requests that are submitted after deadlines will still be evaluated on a rolling schedule by the committee. For more information and to apply, go to the Office of Faculty website.
