Spring 2021 Online Teaching Survey

All faculty and instructors received a short online teaching survey this week. Please take a few minutes to share about your online teaching experience this semester. Emory College Online will use this information to better understand successful online teaching approaches and strategies that may transition well to in-person courses, as well as to shape our best practices moving forward. The survey will remain open until Friday, May 14. Thank you for your feedback.

First Fridays at 4: Do Our Votes Count? Race and Political Inequality in American Democracy

Emory College and the James Weldon Johnson Institute recently launched “First Fridays at 4: Emory Faculty Scholarship on Race,” a new program featuring the groundbreaking scholarship of Emory College faculty (many of them recent hires) on a wide variety of topics related to the study of race, difference, and social justice. Bernard L. Fraga, associate professor of political science, will continue the “First Fridays at 4” series this Friday, May 7 at 4 p.m. with a deep dive on racial and ethnic disparities in voter turnout. Register here.

Fraga will discuss the causes and consequences of racial/ethnic disparities in who turns out to vote. Drawing on research from his recent book “The Turnout Gap: Race, Ethnicity, and Political Inequality in a Diversifying America,” the talk will explain the persistence of large disparities in rates of political participation between whites and non-whites in contemporary elections. The talk will also demonstrate the power of Black, Latinx, and Asian American voters to shape election outcomes when mobilized and empowered to do so, both nationwide and in Georgia specifically.

Retaining Zoom Recordings

Please remember that Zoom recordings are now only retained for 150 days. While most instructors will not need to retain synchronous class session recordings beyond the relevant semester, you should download and retain any Zoom cloud recordings that you’d like to use for future courses (asynchronous content recordings, expert interviews, etc.).

This resource explains the process for downloading Zoom cloud recordings and saving them using Canvas Studio. You may also save your downloaded Zoom recordings in OneDrive (instructions).

Learn more about Managing and Sharing Zoom Recordings. You may recover a Zoom cloud recording up to 30 days after it has been deleted.

Deadline Extension: Proposals for ILA's Fall "Side-Car" Courses Due May 10

The Institute for the Liberal Arts invites applications from Emory College faculty members interested in developing “Side-Car Courses” as part of a team that includes a faculty member in another department or discipline and two undergraduate IDEAS fellows. The deadline for applying for Fall 2021 Sidecar Courses (IDS 290) has been extended to May 10, 2021. A side-car course brings together two courses (and instructors) that overlap, either through methodologies or topics, to create a short, one-hour, interdisciplinary course that runs simultaneously with its two sponsoring courses.

Each faculty member on the team receives a $1,000 stipend. Contact Kim Loudermilk, klouder@emory.edu, for more information about the program. Full details and the application are available on the ILA website. If you are interested but you don’t have a partner, please email Kim Loudermilk (klouder@emory.edu) and Peter Wakefield (pwakefi@emory.edu). They also can match you with IDEAS Fellows.

CFDE to Host Panel May 13 on Scholarly Production During the Pandemic and Beyond

The Center for Faculty Development will host a facilitated conversation on “Scholarly Productivity in the Pandemic and Beyond: Tools, Priorities and Spaces” from 2-3p.m., Thursday, May 13 via Zoom. Register here.

When COVID-19 hit in 2020, labs closed, conferences were canceled, research travel ground to a halt, and for many, working from home was complicated at best. As the year wore on, however, scholars across all disciplines, from bench scientists to humanists, discovered and invented ways to pursue research and writing goals within the confines of the pandemic. This session aims to unpack the ways Emory faculty adapted the tools, priorities, and spaces of their work to those limitations – and what adaptations they might want to keep as we approach a post-pandemic era. The panelists/facilitators include:

  • Jennifer Ayres, Associate Professor of Religious Education; Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program, Candler School of Theology
  • Ellen Ott Marshall, Associate Professor of Christian Ethics and Conflict Transformation, Candler School of Theology
  • Sara McClintock, Associate Professor of Religion, Emory College
  • Bill Wuest, Associate Professor of Chemistry and GRA Distinguished Investigator, Emory College
