TODAY at 4 p.m.: Virtual Celebration Honoring Retiring Faculty

Members of the Emory College faculty who retired or will retire during the 2020-2021 academic year will be recognized at a virtual celebration TODAY, Wednesday, April 21 at 4 p.m.

The College will continue the custom of having department chairs share a few words about their retiring faculty members’ career and accomplishments at this celebration. Following the remarks, we will ask everyone to raise a glass in honor of all of our retirees.

First Fridays at 4: Do Our Votes Count? Race and Political Inequality in American Democracy

Bernard L. Fraga, associate professor of political science, will continue the First Fridays at 4: Emory Faculty on Race series at 4 p.m., Friday, May 7. Register here. He will discuss the causes and consequences of racial/ethnic disparities in who turns out to vote. Drawing on research from his recent book “The Turnout Gap: Race, Ethnicity, and Political Inequality in a Diversifying America,” the talk will explain the persistence of large disparities in rates of political participation between whites and non-whites in contemporary elections. The talk will also demonstrate the power of Black, Latinx, and Asian American voters to shape election outcomes when mobilized and empowered to do so, both nationwide and in Georgia specifically.

Emory College and the James Weldon Johnson Institute recently launched “First Fridays at 4: Emory Faculty Scholarship on Race,” a new program featuring the groundbreaking scholarship of Emory College faculty (many of them recent hires) on a wide variety of topics related to the study of race, difference, and social justice. The series will continue in the fall.

First-Year Faculty Connections Replacing Pre-Major/PACE Advising

Beginning in Fall 2021, Emory College is reframing how faculty will connect with our new first-year students as part of the College’s enhancement of orientation. Using recommendations from the Pre-Major Faculty Advising Working Group (2019) and the success of faculty panels in 2020, we are making some modifications for Fall 2021.

What stays the same?

  • All faculty will be assigned 3-4 new first-year students.
  • Student names will appear in the OPUS Faculty Advising Center as “undeclared.”
  • Faculty will meet with first-year students during Orientation and during the Fall semester.

What’s new?

  • Faculty panels in August will be smaller.
  • Faculty meetings in October will be conversations - NOT official advising meetings.
  • OUE Staff will take over required pre-registration advising meetings before Spring registration.

Save the Dates for First-Year Faculty Connections

  • Panel: 10 a.m.-noon, Monday, August 23
    • All on Zoom, links will be shared in August
    • Moderated by student leaders
  • Department Information Sessions/Drop-In Hours: Monday, August 23, Afternoon
    • Department Liaisons will determine format.
  • Follow-Up Conversations October 2021
    • First-Year Students will reach out to faculty to set up meetings.

ECS 101: The Emory Edge replacing PACE 101

Over the past few years, the College has modified the curriculum of PACE 101 to reflect the emerging Emory Edge program. Starting this fall, all first-year students will enroll in ECS 101: The Emory Edge. This is still a required 1-credit course taken satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Course content includes an introduction to the Liberal Arts, academic integrity and resources, co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. During class sessions and out of class experiences, students are asked to reflect, explore and create 4-year plans.

ECS 102: The Liberal Arts Edge is being redesigned. This optional course, specifically designed to sophomores, is part of the larger Emory Edge initiative and aims to help students understand the foundations, history, and meaning of a liberal arts education.

Proposals for ILA's Fall 2021 "Side-Car" Courses Due April 30

The Institute for the Liberal Arts invites applications from Emory College faculty members interested in developing “Side-Car Courses” as part of a team that includes a faculty member in another department or discipline and two undergraduate IDEAS fellows. A side-car course brings together two courses (and instructors) that overlap, either through methodologies or topics, to create a short, one-hour, interdisciplinary course that runs simultaneously with its two sponsoring courses.

Each faculty member in the team receives a $1,000 stipend. Contact Kim Loudermilk, klouder@emory.edu, for more information about the program. Full details and the application are available on the ILA website. Applications are due Friday, April 30. Contact Kim Loudermilk, klouder@emory.edu, for questions about the program.

Office for Undergraduate Education: Upcoming Deadlines

Grading Basis Change: Extended Deadline May 3

The College Faculty Senate recently passed a resolution allowing students to change their grading basis in one course from letter graded to S/U by the end of the Spring semester. (Note: This is a one-way switch. Students who previously elected to take a course S/U earlier in the semester can’t switch back to graded.) The deadline for students to file this petition with OUE is Monday, May 3.

With respect to grading, please submit your semester grades under the grading basis that appears for students in OPUS. OUE will work to translate grades to S/U where a valid petition has been filed but this may occur after the deadlines for faculty grade submission. We have communicated with students about the impact and limitations of S/U grading.

Spring 2021 Grades

Please make note of the following deadlines for spring 2021 grade submissions:

  • For graduating seniors: Grades due at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 13 (extension to 10 a.m. on Friday, May 14 for exams that took place on May 12).
  • For all other students: Grades due at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18.
