Retirement Incentive Program Applications Due April 1

The deadline to apply for Emory College's one-time voluntary retirement incentive plans is Monday, April 1, 2019. There are no plans to extend or renew the retirement incentive so those interested need to apply now. Faculty may arrange to retire as late as Aug. 31, 2021.

The incentive plan is open to all members of the faculty who are retirement-eligible under University policy and who are nearing age 65 or older. Email dean_of_faculty@emory.edu with any questions. Full details for Tenure Track faculty and Lecture Track Faculty are available on the Office of Faculty website.

LTF Promotion Deadline

Faculty who intend to apply for promotion from lecturer to senior lecturer during the 2019-2020 academic year should discuss their plans with their chairs or directors this semester. Chairs and directors should notify the Office of Faculty (dean_of_faculty@emory.edu) by May 1 regarding anyone who plans to apply for promotion to senior lecturer during the 2019-2020 academic year. More information is available on the Office of Faculty website, under the Lecture-Track Faculty tab.

Faculty Development Opportunities

Hightower Speaker Funds: Fall 2019 Applications Now Open

Each year Emory College receives funds from the Hightower endowment, which memorializes the late Robert E. Hightower Sr. This endowment provides funds to bring outstanding visiting lecturers to Emory.

The College has typically committed funds of $75,000-$100,000 annually. These include small allocations for partial funding of a single speaker to large amounts to support conferences with several speakers. Applications for Fall 2019 events are currently being accepted. The deadline to submit the application is Monday April 1, 2019.

More information about the application process can be found on the Office of Faculty website along with the Hightower Fund application.

Book Publishing: Meet the Editor and Agent

Emory College faculty are invited to Meet the Editor and Agent, an annual event that brings experts in publishing to campus, sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence. The event takes place at noon, Tuesday, April 23 in the Jones Room of Woodruff Library

The event includes a discussion and Q&A session with Andrew Kinney, general editor at Harvard University Press, and Elias Altman of Massie & McQuilkin Literary Agents on the changing landscape of scholarly publishing and current trends. They will also be available to meet one-on-one with faculty. For registration and more information about this event, please visit the CFDE website.

Online Course Evaluations: Upcoming Info Sessions and Workshops

After the successful launch of new online course evaluations for the College last fall, several information sessions sponsored by EmoryUP, the University Registrar, and Emory College will be available starting next week to provide support for faculty and staff as the transition to the new format continues. Questions? Email ec-courseevals@emory.edu.

EvaluationKIT 101 Info Sessions

  • Monday, March 25, 11:30 a.m., White Hall 207
  • Thursday, March 28, 2:30 p.m., Woodruff Library 215

During these sessions, faculty and department administrators will review the basics of the College’s new online course evaluations via EvaluationKIT in Canvas. This information will be most helpful for instructors who did not teach fall semester, administrators and instructors who are new to Emory as of Spring 2019, or anyone who would like a refresher on basic, high-level details about the College’s new online evaluation platform.

EvaluationKIT Tips & Tricks for Instructors

  • Monday, April 1, 1 p.m., White Hall 207
  • Wednesday, April 3, 2:30 p.m., White Hall 206
  • Friday, April 5, 2:30 p.m., White Hall 207

During these sessions, faculty and staff will go through specific policies and examples of how departments and instructors are able to manage their own online course evaluations, including: creating custom questions, administering evaluations during class time, and accessing evaluation data. Since this information will focus more on evaluation strategy than tactics, it will be most helpful for instructors and administrators involved in making these decisions with their instructors.

EvaluationKIT Nuts & Bolts for Administrators

  • Monday, April 8, 2:30 p.m., MSC 301A
  • Tuesday, April 9, 10 a.m., Woodruff Library 215
  • Wednesday, April 10, 10 a.m., Cox Hall Computing Center

These sessions are specifically for department administrators who have been granted access to create and modify evaluations in the EvaluationKIT platform (Lane DeNicola will notify administrators as their access is turned on). Please bring your laptops and join us as we walk through how to access and navigate EvaluationKIT, create and modify evaluation instruments, set custom start and end dates, and work with reporting data.

Office for Undergraduate Education: Deadlines and Updates

Pre-Registration for Fall 2019 Courses March 25 – April 10

The weeks of March 18 to April 10 are designated for academic advising and pre-registration for students, who will be assessing their academic progress, defining their goals, and planning for the fall semester.

The Fall 2019 Course Atlas is now available online for advising purposes. Student advising transcripts and degree audit information can be found in OPUS. Student advisement information can be found in the new Degree Tracker in OPUS. Information on how to access and use Degree Tracker is available on the University Registrar’s website.

College Diploma Ceremony – Faculty Parents Participation

Full-time Emory University faculty who are parents of graduating Emory College students are invited to accompany their children as they cross the stage during the College diploma ceremony on Monday, May 13. Faculty members who wish to participate will need to secure regalia. Those who need to rent or purchase regalia for Commencement should contact Heather LaFleur (hlafleu@emory.edu) in the bookstore ASAP.

Degree Tracker Enhancements Launched March 19

The Office of the Registrar, SIS, and EmoryUP have introduced two Degree Tracker enhancements now available: a new status indicator for requirement categories that are “Satisfied with In-Progress Courses” and the ability to enter multiple exceptions against a single requirement category. More information can be found on the Registrar’s website.

The Registrar’s Office will also be hosting a series of hands-on training sessions for Degree Tracker administrators focusing on the new multi-entry feature for exceptions. Administrators with data entry permission will receive an invite to participate in one or more of these trainings from the OUE. If you have any questions about Degree Tracker or would like more information about the platform or these new enhancements, email the Degree Tracker team at degreetrackerhelp@listserv.cc.emory.edu.

Extended Withdrawal Deadline

The extended withdrawal deadline for new students (first year, transfer or Oxford Continuees) is Friday, April 5 at 4 p.m. Students are required to get the signature of their instructor on the withdrawal paperwork. Your signature on the paperwork does not indicate your approval of the student’s decision, merely that they have had the conversation with you regarding their intentions. Students must submit their paperwork to White Hall 300 by 4 p.m. on April 5.

Spring Final Grades & Deadline for Senior Grades

Final exams take place May 2-8. Faculty are reminded that grades for graduating seniors are due by the following dates:

  • For final exams taking place on or before May 7, your senior grades are due to be submitted by 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 9.
  • For final exams that took place on May 8, your senior grades are due to be submitted by 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10.
  • If you have a final exam for a large class on May 7 with a significant number of seniors, you may contact Dean Jason Ciejka (jciejka@emory.edu) or Dean Cora MacBeth (cmacbet@emory.edu) to request an extension on the reporting deadline. If granted, your grades will be due by 10 a.m. on Friday, May 10.

OUE Proctored Makeup Exams

OUE will proctor final exams for students in the College who cannot take their exam at the scheduled time. Students with conflicting exams or three or more exams in one day can complete the form found on the OUE website to present to their professor. In addition, due to Ramadan, students who will be fasting and who have an afternoon exam can request a morning exam time. Students can pick up a religious accommodation form from 300 White Hall. Students who need a makeup exam time for conflicts or religious reasons should present their forms to their professor who will submit an exam request to OUE through the Proctored Final Exam Form on the OUE Website.

Nominate Students for Marion Luther Brittain Award

Nomination letters should be submitted to Sandra Edwards (sandra.edwards@emory.edu) by Monday, March 25, 2019.
