Emory Speakers Bureau Pilot Program

The Office of Undergraduate Admission is piloting an Emory Faculty Speakers Bureau that seeks to showcase the College’s scholarship and academic programs to young scholars in our community. This is an opportunity for Emory to engage with the community, introduce talented students to academe, and showcase how the topics they study apply beyond high school.

Interested faculty should complete this brief survey by Jan. 15: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EmorySB.

Emory College of Arts and Sciences faculty are invited to opt in to participate. You will be featured in a print and online publication describing your areas of research and teaching. High school teachers from Atlanta-area schools will then be able to request you as a speaker—at a time convenient for you—on topics related to your work. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will support the logistics of the pilot program (transportation, scheduling, etc.). If you have questions, contact Angela Holmon (angela.holmon@emory.edu). Participation will be noted in any future assessments of university service.

Jones Room of the Woodruff Library.

If you published a book this year, please complete the online form at this link to be included on this list of honorees. Please submit information about book-length projects only. Submissions are due December 15 so that every effort can be made to have your book represented at the event on February 12.

New NIH Clinical Trial Requirements

The NIH has been implementing a series of policy requirements designed to strengthen stewardship of public resources, scientific rigor, transparency, ethical oversight, and accountability. There are more policy requirements planned for January 2018, including a new mechanism for submitting NIH applications.

University Research Administration is taking several approaches to keep the Emory research community up-to-date with these changes. To better support our investigators, appropriate staff are undergoing training regarding the requirements and Emory’s process for conforming to them. Pertinent documents and tools are available on the Office of Sponsored Programs’ website. If you are interested in a presentation to your research group contact Robin Ginn, rginn@emory.edu. For more information, visit the OSP website.

Academic Year Salary and Indirect Cost Recovery Programs

ECAS Finance Administration and the Office of the Sr. Associate Dean for Research are currently reviewing requests for Academic Year Salary Recovery and Indirect Cost Recovery programs. Funding for approved submissions received by the deadline will be transferred to the appropriate account no later than December 31, 2017. Reminder: New Waste Policy in 2018

Emory University is transitioning to a new waste, composting, and recycling policy in January 2018, which seeks to divert 95% of the University’s landfill waste by 2025. Campus Services will begin installing bins for the Waste Management Plan during the month of December in anticipation of a January start date. The changes to desk-side service will be phased in over the spring and those dates will be communicated later. The details of the policy are available on the Office of Sustainability Initiatives website at www.sustainability.emory.edu. If you have any questions that aren't answered in the online materials, please send them to the College Facilities Office.

Holiday Schedules

The University will be open Dec. 27-28. In keeping with our College practice, chairs may decide whether it is reasonable to close their department during this time. If you decide to close your department, it is expected that someone from your department will check departmental messages — phone and e-mail — at least daily, so that anyone trying to reach your department can receive timely assistance

Should you decide to close your department, each member of your staff must either take vacation leave, or work from home, meaning, in particular, that they must be accessible, and responsive to any appropriate requests. Anyone who will not be available must take vacation time. Official University holidays are: Monday, Dec. 25, Tuesday, Dec. 26, and the New Year’s Eve holiday Friday, Dec. 29. For questions about this practice, contact Laura Papotto, laura.papotto@emory.edu, for assistance.

Inclement Weather

Please remind your department about the Emory Closing information/inclement weather hotline, 404-727-1234. Closings and delayed openings also will be posted to the main Emory web homepage, www.emory.edu and across the University’s social media channels. Please discuss with your department how you will distribute closing information to your staff and faculty should a closing occur. For more information regarding emergency preparedness and response, please see the Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR) website: http://emergency.emory.edu/.
