Call for Named Chair Nominations

All department chairs and program directors are encouraged to nominate colleagues for consideration for named chairs, including the Winship Distinguished Research Chairs, three of which are awarded every year, as well as two additional termed chairs, the Arthur Blank/NEH Professorship and the Nat C. Robertson Chair in Science and Society. The College seeks to fill these chairs with faculty interested and capable of leading initiatives to support faculty development in the areas of pedagogy and curriculum.

Nominations that include letters of support from more than one faculty member are particularly encouraged, although all nominations will be considered carefully. Generally speaking, nominees should not already be holders of named chairs.

Descriptions of Named Chairs

Samuel Candler Dobbs: Full professors who have shown extraordinary accomplishment and considerable future promise in research and teaching.

Goodrich C. White: Full professors who have distinguished themselves by extraordinary service to the university and by strong accomplishment in research and teaching.

Winship Distinguished Research Award: Tenured faculty who demonstrate singular accomplishments in research. Such recognition should honor achievement and further scholarly research and research-based teaching. Awarded for a three-year term.

Arthur Blank/NEH Chair in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences: Tenured faculty in the humanities and/or humanistic social sciences with a record of exemplary teaching and a commitment to pedagogical rigor and innovation. Appointees are expected to organize programming designed to enhance pedagogy and curricular development in the College, and continue teaching in her/his department(s), including at least one introductory level course each year. One leadership function of the NEH professors will be to serve on a newly formed advisory committee on Pedagogy and Curriculum. Awarded for a three-year term.

Nat C. Robertson Professor of Science and Society: Awarded annually to an outstanding senior scholar-teacher, open to lecture and tenure track, who addresses the nexus between science and society. This chair will continue to teach on a regular basis in her/his department(s) and will serve on a newly formed advisory committee on Pedagogy and Curriculum. Awarded for a three-year term.

Classroom Mini-Grants Available

The Center for Faculty Development and Excellence is accepting proposals for Classroom Mini-Grants for the fall 2017 semester, due Wednesday, April 26. Anyone currently teaching at Emory is eligible, including tenure track faculty, lecturers, adjunct faulty, visiting faculty and graduate students. Preference will be given to teachers who have not received past grants and for new course offerings. The request can be up to $300, and are intended to be used for an activity directly related to a Fall 2017 class.

Scholarly Publishing Panel April 11

Emory College faculty are invited to the “Meet the Editor and Agent” panel discussion sponsored by the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 11 in Winship Ballroom, Dobbs University Center. Panelists include Patrick Allen, acquisitions editor, University of Georgia Press; Walter Biggins, executive editor, University of Georgia Press; and Rob McQuilkin of Massie & McQuilkin, Literary Agents. They will discuss trends and expectations for faculty authors in the current environment of scholarly publishing, focusing in particular on finding the right press for a book project. Upcoming Deadlines

Canvas Migration

All faculty must migrate their course materials into Canvas. The University's Blackboard license will expire this summer and all material currently stored on Blackboard will no longer be available. After Aug. 31, 2017, there will be no way to recover deleted or un-exported data from Blackboard.
