Upcoming Deadlines & Dates

Temporary Faculty and Leave of Absence Requests

Requests for temporary faculty for the 2017-18 academic year are due Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. Applications for leaves of absence (including associate professor completion leaves) and course release during the 2017-18 academic year are due Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. Departments chairs should send all their respective faculty and leave requests to Susan Lee, Emory College of Arts and Sciences, 400 Candler Library, or emailed to her at slee05@emory.edu.

Faculty Awards

Nominations are due soon for two of the College’s top awards for Arts & Sciences faculty that are presented each year during Commencement. Please take time to identify people most deserving of these important honors. Nominations should be emailed to Melody Edwards, mdedwa3@emory.edu, Senior Program Coordinator for Faculty Development. More information on faculty award and honors can be found here.

Emory Williams Teaching Award – Nominations Due January 25

These awards are made annually in each of the three divisions and are presented at Commencement in May. Winners are selected by a committee of distinguished faculty and previous award recipients.

To begin the selection process, the Office of Faculty invites nominations for these prestigious awards from any member of the Emory College faculty. We especially encourage joint nominations and nominations from departments and programs. Your brief ONE-PAGE nomination letter justifying the nomination should include specific information about the nominee’s teaching. Nominees will be notified and will need to submit supplemental material due Feb. 6. Nominees that are not chosen for the award this year will be held and reconsidered for three years.

Cuttino Award – Nominations Due February 10

This award is named in honor of the late George Peddy Cuttino, a member of the Emory College history department from 1952 to 1984, who was known among several generations of Emory students not only as a teacher, but also as a guide and counselor beyond the classroom. The successful recipient of this prestigious award should exhibit a similar record of exceptional mentoring of students. We invite nominations from any member of the Emory College faculty. Nominations that are not chosen for the award this year will be held and reconsidered for three years.

Summer Undergraduate Research Programs

Please remind your students that Emory College offers summer funding for undergraduates interested in participating in research, and applications are now available. The research program, formerly run as SURE and SIRE fellowships, is a 10-week, full-time residential program on Emory’s campus from May 30-August 3, 2017, and is open to students in any field. All Emory students need a faculty mentor and must submit a proposal about their research plans with their applications. Students may choose one of two tracks:

  • Research in Natural and Biomedical Sciences: Applications are due January 27; decisions announced March 5.
  • Research in Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences: Applications are due February 1; decisions announced March 5.

These summer programs are using the same applications as the former SURE and SIRE programs, and will have some combined events. In addition, some details of the programs, such as student funding, have changed. More details are available here or email Gillian Hue, ghue@emory.edu, director of undergraduate research programs and summer programs in the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Canvass Migration

Faculty are reminded that they must migrate their course materials into Canvas before the summer. The University’s Blackboard license will expire in August 2017. To learn more about Canvas and available training classes, visit http://it.emory.edu/canvas/index.html

UPDATE: Indirect Cost Share Program

The College is currently dispersing Indirect Cost (IDC) share funds to qualified faculty; all PI’s who qualify can expect these funds in their research accounts by the end of January.

According to College policy, faculty with research awards that generate at least the administrative portion of the federal level of IDC with an indirect cost rate of 26% or more will be provided a 2% “share” of their indirect costs.

The purpose of this program is to cover needs in excess of those ordinarily provided by the College as part of the IDR: for example, extra computers, extra disk storage, or office charges.

Funds will automatically be deposited in the research account of the grant’s PI. If there are multiple PIs, it will be the responsibility of the lead PI to share the funds appropriately. Department ADA’s should notify each qualifying PI as the disbursement arrives. In the future these disbursements will occur each fall semester after the close of the fiscal year. Contact Ron Calabrese, biolrc@emory.edu, senior associate dean for research, for any questions.

RAS UPDATE: New Online Intent to Submit a Proposal Form

The Colleges and Professional Schools Research Administration Services (CAPS RAS) in the College of Arts and Sciences has launched a new electronic intent to submit a proposal form. The electronic form facilitates the CAPS RAS Pre-Award team in balancing proposal workload and tracking the progress of proposal submissions. The new electronic intent to submit form replaces the email the Principal Investigator (PI) would have sent the CAPS RAS Pre-Award Administrator notifying them of their intent to submit a proposal and ensures their proposal is routed in a timely manner through Emory’s system.

PI’s who want to submit a proposal will notify their CAPS RAS Pre-Award Administrator of their intent to submit a proposal by clicking this link to the online CAPS RAS Intent to Submit Form.

Once the PI completes the form and submits the form, within two (2) business days, a CAPS RAS Pre-Award Administrator will contact them to begin support. PI’s are encouraged to begin utilizing this new process.

College Department Websites

Extra Assistance Available

This semester, the Emory College Office of Communications is offering additional, temporary help with small web projects or deferred maintenance departments may want to implement on their websites. This may include, but is not limited to: adding photos to your site, adding new content or reorganizing sections and implementing components in the standard template in Cascade. Projects will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis with the goal to complete the projects before the end of the academic year. Contact web producer Jill Hennecy at jill.hennecy@emory.edu or 404-727-9903 for more information.

Updating Giving Language and Links on Department Websites

College Development and Alumni Relations will work with each department and program this semester to ensure that departmental websites have up-to-date links to give to the department and consistent language around giving. A College DAR staffer will reach out to your department’s administrator between January and March to work through this process. Email Kate Lawlor, Senior Director, Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, with any questions or needs at kate.lawlor@emory.edu or 404-712-0464.
